Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are very large ants. The average size of a carpenter ant is 0.38 to 0.5 inches long, and queens can grow to be as large as one full inch! These ants are either black or black and red. Queens, of course, have wings, but they lose them when they start a new nest.

Carpenter ants are extremely prevalent in Minnesota. You can find them all over residential properties, causing damage everywhere they go. Carpenter ants are wood-destroying ants. They love to eat moist wood, leaving sawdust behind. Structures of homes often suffer when carpenter ants eat their way through wood structures, burrow, and nest inside the wood. The larger the colony, the greater the damage that these ants can do. When you see a tunnel carved out in the wood by carpenter ants, it will be smooth and have a well-sanded look to it.

Some people may confuse carpenter ants with termites because of the sawdust they leave behind, but termites are very uncommon in Minnesota. Suppose you need to identify the difference between termites and carpenter ants. In that case, you can identify carpenter ants as having shorter wings and termites having wings much longer than their bodies.
