Where Do Mosquitoes Go in the Winter? Hibernation and Other Behaviors Explained

All insects are cold blooded creatures, so they lack the ability to regulate their body temperature. What this means is that they pretty much match the temperature of whatever environment they are in. Mosquitoes specifically prefer temperatures of eighty degrees to remain comfortable and active.
Mosquitoes require sources of stagnant water in order to survive and mature. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in these areas of water and the larvae require this water in order to develop. That is why mosquitoes tend to be prevalent in swampy, humid, or moist areas where they can easily repopulate.
As for Winter
We now know that mosquitoes require a semi-specific climate in order to survive, so then what happens in the winter? The answer is a little more complicated. They do not migrate to warmer climates, but they do hibernate.
As for reproducing, some species of mosquitoes are able to lay eggs in the late summer that will allow the new generation to hibernate in those eggs until the weather begins to warm. The eggs typically rest in the ice and snow for the winter, and when it melts, the hatched larvae have a water source to mature in. Those species whose eggs are not resilient enough to survive the winter will typically hibernate in animal burrows and dens in order to keep a bit more warm and survive the cold front.
